NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- New York City's COVID-19 test positivity rate on a seven-day average went down to 8.08 percent, compared with 8.4 percent one day earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, de Blasio said that there were 279 new hospital admissions and new cases of the coronavirus reached 4,621, adding that "More vaccines are on the way. Keep practicing social distancing and wearing a mask during this final battle in the fight against COVID-19."
A push by de Blasio to tap into COVID-19 vaccine stocks reserved for second doses could delay the full, two-shot vaccination for some New Yorkers, the news portal Patch reported on Tuesday.
"I really believe that when we move the second doses up and use them for first doses whenever possible, it just allows us to do the most essential thing, which is protect people," said the mayor.
"Fifty percent protection for a senior citizen is so much better than no protection at all. And again, spend some time with our seniors, and you hear this loud and clear -- whenever I've talked to a senior about what this means to them, it sounds obvious, but I'm going to say it, it's a matter of life and death," he added.
As of Tuesday evening, the coronavirus deaths added up to 26,720 and the confirmed cases 571,502 in NYC, according to The City, a project that tracks the spread of confirmed COVID-19 infections and fatalities in New York City, based on information provided by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the governor's office, The COVID Tracking Project and the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
