Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], April 14 (ANI): DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Monday hit back at Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi after he asked students to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' during an event in Madurai.
Speaking to ANI, Annadurai said the Governor's actions reflect 'majoritarian muscle-flexing' that undermines the country's secular fabric.
'The governor has gone beyond his stay in Tamil Nadu. If he had some shame left in him, he would have resigned from the Governor's post. He is trying to stroke controversy one after the other. Imagine if there was a governor from the Muslim Community who asked students to chant Allahu Akbar. What kind of uproar it would have created?' Annadurai said.
'You go to a religious gathering and do whatever you want to do, nobody will question you. But in a college, there are students of every faith. This is flexing the majoritarian muscle. That does not work well for our democracy and secular fabric of the country,' he said.
Calling him a 'Hindutva fanatic,' the DMK leader asserted that such behaviour is unacceptable in Tamil Nadu.
'The governor is a constitutional functionary, and we expect him to uphold the Constitutional values. But what he has done here, he has trampled upon them. We never expected that the Governor would stoop so low. He is like a Hindutva fanatic. This is not acceptable in Tamil Nadu,' Saravanan said.
At an event held at a private engineering college in Madurai on Saturday, Governor Ravi, who was the chief guest, at the end of his address, asked students to chant 'Jai Shri Ram ' after him.
Congress MLA JMH Hassan Maulaana said the Governor's remarks were highly condemnable, stating that the latter was speaking the language of the RSS and the BJP. He said that such remarks did not behoove the constitutional post occupied by R N Ravi. (ANI)
